If you are planning a trip to Coorg, there is one destination you absolutely cannot skip. Just a stone’s throw from the misty hills of Kodagu lies Bylakuppe, a vibrant, spiritual paradise that transports you straight to Tibet.

As you drive off the highway and into this serene settlement, the landscape transforms. Intricate prayer flags flutter in the breeze, golden rooftops gleam in the sun, and the soothing hum of Buddhist chants fills the air. Whether you are travelling solo, with friends, or on a family vacation, Bylakuppe offers a profound first-hand experience of Tibetan culture, music, architecture, and food.

Here is everything you need to know to plan your perfect visit.

Why Bylakuppe is a Must-Visit

Established in 1961, Bylakuppe holds the distinction of being the first and largest Tibetan refugee settlement in India. Comprising 16 distinct villages, it is home to magnificent monasteries, traditional temples representing major Tibetan Buddhist traditions, and world-renowned Buddhist universities for advanced studies.

Geography & Distance

While Bylakuppe is geographically located in the Periyapatna Taluk of the Mysuru district, it sits just 6 to 7 km from Kushalnagara—the primary gateway to Coorg. Because of this, it is universally included in every standard Coorg travel itinerary.

It makes for an easy weekend getaway or a perfect day trip:
  • From Madikeri: 36 km
  • From Mysuru: 84 km
  • From Bengaluru: 217 km

Bylakuppe: Key Highlights & Monasteries to Explore

1. Namdroling Monastery & The Golden Temple

Your first stop will undoubtedly be the spectacular Namdroling Monastery, the region's most significant monastery and the first built after the settlement was established. The complex houses schools, colleges, a hospital, and the famous Golden Temple.

Inside the main temple hall, prepare to be mesmerised. Surrounded by elaborate wall paintings, intricate thangkas, and photographs of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the energy here is incredibly grounding. The crowning glory is the trio of monumental, 40-foot-tall golden statues depicting Buddha, Padmasambhava, and Amitayus.

Take your time to sit in silence, absorb the spiritual vibe, and admire the breathtaking craftsmanship.

2. Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

If you want to escape the crowds, head to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. Established in 1972 by the 14th Dalai Lama, this beautiful campus serves as a major seat for both Buddhist and modern education. It is far less crowded than Namdroling, offering a deeply peaceful atmosphere.

3. Sera Mey Monastery

Another architectural and spiritual marvel, the nearby Sera Mey Monastery is an incredible place to witness the daily life, academic dedication, and rigorous scriptural debates of the resident monks.

4. The Visa Stupa

Keep an eye out for this unique stupa during your exploration. Devotees routinely circumambulate (walk around) this specific stupa with prayers to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and successfully secure travel visas!

The Food: Exploring Authentic Tibetan Cuisine

Because this is a travel and food blog, let’s talk about the culinary side of Bylakuppe! You cannot leave without diving into authentic Tibetan flavors.

Both inside and right outside the Golden Temple complex, you will find numerous local restaurants.
  • What to try: Steaming hot momos, comforting bowls of Thukpa (noodle soup), Shapta (stir-fried meat), and traditional butter tea.
  • Foodie Tip: Don’t plan on an early breakfast here. Most authentic restaurants open later in the morning. Your best strategy is to plan for a hearty, traditional Tibetan lunch instead.

Essential Travel Tips for Visitors

  • Timings: While the main monastery gates and outer complex open as early as 7:00 AM for morning prayers, public viewing hours for the primary temple halls and the golden statues are strictly between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
  • Beat the Crowd: Bylakuppe is incredibly popular and gets heavily crowded on weekends. For a truly peaceful, spiritual experience, visit early in the morning on a weekday.
  • Entry Fee: There is no entry fee to visit the temples.
  • Dress Code: There is no strict dress code, but visitors are expected to dress modestly out of respect for the religious and monastic community.
  • Souvenir Shopping: There are bustling markets and shops both outside and within the Golden Temple complex. It’s the perfect place to pick up prayer wheels, singing bowls, traditional clothing, and local handicrafts.
